When you choose Bucuti & Tara for a well-deserved honeymoon or vacation, you have our promise that it is backed by a dedication to your comprehensive care and shared values.
Green Globe is the premier global certification for sustainability in travel and tourism, benchmarking businesses that prioritize eco-friendly operations. To earn this prestigious certification, organizations must meet rigorous criteria covering environmental, social and economic sustainability. The Green Globe Certification Standard includes 44 criteria in four groups and supported by over 380 compliance indicators. The Standard has been developed over three decades and guarantees the highest level of sustainable operations and management.
Earning a perfect score from Green Globe is no small feat—it indicates that every assessed aspect of our operations aligns with the highest sustainability standards. Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort is proud to join the elite group of businesses worldwide that have achieved this distinction.
Green Globe CEO Birte Pelayo said, “Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort needs to be commended for its unprecedented performance with successive perfect 100% compliance scores, along with its PLANTINUM status representing 15 years of certified sustainability. Over this time the resort has launched a wealth of initiatives, both local and global. Green Globe would like to highlight Bucuti’s promotion of carbon neutral vacations, which have clearly demonstrated that a tourism business, with the enthusiastic support of its guests, can lead the way with direct action on climate challenges.
Added Pelayo, “Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort has been a forerunner in sustainable tourism in both the Caribbean and on the world stage, aligning its management with the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals, while regularly organising beach clean-up and many other local initiatives. We recommend tourism businesses world-wide look to Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort for inspiration and instruction in tourism practices that are the future of our industry.”
“It is an absolute privilege to receive a second perfect score from Green Globe. The organization was founded after the United Nations’ pivotal 1992 Earth Summit and as I watched Aruba’s hospitality offerings begin to expand, I knew we wanted to care for the island’s natural beauty, the very essence of what captivates visitors, so Bucuti & Tara turned to Green Globe in creating what is now one of the Top 25 Hotels in the World for our guests to enjoy, our staff to thrive and our community to prosper sustainably,” says Ewald Biemans, Owner/CEO of Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort, Aruba.
For more than 37 years, we’ve continued to push the boundaries of eco-conscious hospitality. Today, more than 400 action-backed initiatives create the resort’s sustainability program, which the United Nations deemed “highly replicable and scalable” for hotels around the globe to follow.
Here are some highlights of Bucuti & Tara’s sustainability program that reflect Green Globe’s comprehensive approach to people, place and planet:
Carbon-neutral certification, soon to be Net Zero
In 2018, Bucuti & Tara became the Caribbean’s first certified carbon-neutral hotel, achieving this status through a successful year-over-year program that reduces our carbon footprint. Many guests often share how thankful they are to come for a well-deserved vacation knowing that their visit leaves no negative environmental impact.
Solar energy expansion
Bucuti & Tara has the largest solar power system in the commercial sector on the island. This joins the 25% of renewable energy provided by Aruba’s own solar panels and wind turbines. This effort reduces dependency on fossil fuels as the world combats climate change.
Waste reduction and circular economy
The resort has implemented advanced waste management practices, including composting organic waste, banning single-use plastic and Styrofoam more than 20 years ago, and having an extensive reduce, reuse, recycle program. By partnering with local businesses, we’ve created a circular economy model that minimizes waste and supports Aruba’s economy.
Protecting aruba’s natural beauty
Bucuti & Tara actively supports marine and land conservation efforts, such as partnering with Turtugaruba for sea turtle protection and educational programs. In 2016, the resort founded and is the primary funder of Stimami Sterilisami, a national spay/neuter program for local dogs and cats that humanely reduces pet overpopulation on island by providing subsidized spaying and neutering procedures and promotes responsible pet ownership. To date, almost 40,000 pets have been spayed or neutered and the program is expanding to provide fully complimentary spay and neuter procedures to rescue organizations and low income households.
In 2022, the resort, along with Owner/CEO Ewald Biemans and island friend Greta Marie Case, gifted Aruba with a 32-acre/13-hectare prime stretch of land in the middle of busy Noord, called The Bucuti Tara - GMC Nature Preserve. This preserve is being reforested in partnership with Ban Lanta y Planta and nature trails are being added. Fragile ecosystems are already awakening and when the reforestation is complete with 15,000 indigenous trees, more than 375 tCO2 emissions will be drawn down from the atmosphere each year for Aruba’s future generations.
Guests are invited to join in many of these efforts to include Bucuti & Tara’s 32-year tradition of monthly beach clean-ups resulting in the removal of 1,000 lbs of debris annually.
Community collaboration and staff pride
Sustainability extends beyond the environment—it’s about enriching lives. Over the past two years, we’ve partnered with local organizations to promote sustainable tourism and invest in educational initiatives that benefit Aruba’s future generations. One of the resort guests’ favorite collaborations is our Authentic Aruba & Caribbean Menu. Literally decades in the making, this dining experience is a collection of staff and their families’ ancestral recipes giving guests a true taste of our culture.
As we celebrate this achievement, we invite our guests to join us in preserving our island’s natural beauty. During your stay, enjoy sustainable dining experiences, participate in eco-friendly activities, and embrace small, thoughtful actions to help protect our planet.
At Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort, sustainability joins the cornerstones of romance and wellness. Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Together, we’re making a difference!
