If you’ve had the delight of meeting Nakarid Ochoa Diaz, one of Bucuti’s star associates, you’ve likely felt true warmth and hospitality as abundant as Aruba’s sunshine.
At Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort, we know that our team is the heartbeat of our success, and today, we are overjoyed to celebrate one of our own. Nakarid Ochoa Diaz, a long-standing Bucuti Associate is this year’s recipient of the AHATA Excellence Award. This prestigious recognition embraces her unwavering dedication, exemplary service and passion for hospitality.
Nakarid's inspiring journey with Bucuti & Tara began in 1998 as a busser at the former Pirate’s Nest restaurant. After briefly stepping away, she returned in 2006 with renewed ambition and a steadfast commitment to excellence. Over the years, Nakarid has flourished in a variety of roles, consistently delivering outstanding service and embodying the resort's core values every single day.
When asked what draws Nakarid to a career as a hospitality professional at Bucuti & Tara she explains, “There are many reasons that attract me to work at Bucuti. I began my journey at a very young age, without knowing English or having any experience in hospitality. However, year after year, I’ve had the privilege of learning and growing, guided by incredible mentors who have shaped my path. Bucuti is more than just a workplace; it’s a place where passion, love, and discipline come together to create an environment of continuous learning and personal development.”
Her journey is a testament to perseverance and a passion for creating memorable experiences. On the AHATA Facebook post celebrating Nakarid, one Bucuti & Tara guest shared, “We’ve known her since she was a hardworking kid. She was one of the reasons we were return visitors. Congratulations Nakarid!”
Recognizing opportunities for growth, Nakarid has continuously worked to enhance her skills and leadership abilities, setting a shining example for her team and colleagues.
In Feb. 2024, of 159 staff members, Nakarid was one of 56 Bucuti Associates recognized for her milestone service, with 61% of those recognized employed for ten or more years.
Nakarid's contributions extend far beyond her daily responsibilities. She has a unique gift for connecting with guests, often forming long-lasting relationships that reflect the welcoming spirit of Aruba. Her ability to create unforgettable moments is the Bucuti & Tara promise brought to life.
When asked about her favorite guest stories, she shares, “After so many years of work, I have countless favorite stories. These moments are filled with both joy and sadness. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of meeting wonderful tourists, some of whom are no longer with us. Many of these stories are deeply meaningful because they’ve become shared experiences—not just mine, but my family’s as well. These tourists, over time, stopped being just visitors; they became a cherished part of my life and my extended family.”
Her impact also resonates throughout the community. Nakarid actively participates in beach cleanups, charity events and team-building activities, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to Bucuti & Tara’s mission of sustainability and excellence. Nakarid’s advocacy for Aruba’s treasures, from iconic landmarks to hidden gems, helps guests discover the full enchantment of the island.
Nakarid is also known for her wearable art, “I have been a proud member of the Art and Craft Aruba Foundation for over 10 years, dedicating my time to creating unique jewelry, headbands, and bows. I take great joy in crafting special, one-of-a-kind pieces for tourists, ensuring each creation is made with meticulous care and heartfelt passion.”
Nakarid’s dedication to her craft is matched only by her passion for growth. She consistently seeks opportunities to enhance her skills, inspiring her peers with her relentless pursuit of excellence. As a mentor and role model, she embodies the values of teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement, making her a cornerstone of the Bucuti & Tara family.
When asked what she is most proud of at work and perhaps beyond work, Nakarid says, “Year after year, we learn many things, but 2024 has been especially emotional and transformative for me. As you know, I was promoted to captain after many years of dedication, and I am determined to take on the responsibility of continuing to grow, with the ultimate goal of becoming a supervisor. At the beginning of the year, I completed two supervisor courses, and after so many years away from studying, I realized that it’s never too late to learn.
This year also brought another achievement that I am incredibly proud of: participating in my first marathon—the prestigious KLM Marathon, an important event on the island. At 49 years old, I earned my very first medal, and it was an unforgettable experience. Adding to this, being recognized by AHATA has been another reason to feel deeply proud.
All these accomplishments feel even more meaningful when my family, friends, and even tourists share their pride in what I’ve achieved. Their support and encouragement remind me that, no matter your age or circumstances, it is always possible to achieve your dreams.”
Nakarid closes with, “As I have always said, the most important thing for me at Bucuti are my guests. I take care of them and look after them so that they feel at home, so that they take home the best memories of their vacation in Aruba.”
The AHATA Excellence Award recognizes individuals who go above and beyond, and Nakarid epitomizes this spirit. She is a bright beacon for both Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort along with Aruba’s hospitality industry.
We hope you’ll join us in saying “pambien” our native Papiamento for congratulations to Nakarid. This award is a well-deserved acknowledgment of your hard work, and we are so proud to have you as a part of our team.
